Wasatch senior Garrett Sweat, wrestling in the 132 lb class, goes for position on his opponent during the All-Star Classic held at Utah Valley University on Tuesday night. |
Most prep sports reserve their All-Star games or competitions for the end of the season. The Utah High School Athletic Association, however, holds their All-Star event for wrestling just after the new year, which is at the halfway point of the season for most squads.
Wasatch High School senior, Garrett Sweat, a 132-pound state qualifying wrestler of a year ago, was recently selected to compete in his second Utah All-Star Classic wrestling tournament held last night at Utah Valley University. It's a great honor to be selected in this event which holds such great state high school wrestling tradition.
When all 36 matches had finished, the 4A classification, which entered as massive favorites, claimed top spot with a final tally of 36 points. Defending champion 3A tied with 5A for second place with 26 points apiece. So Garrett's contribution was huge for his Region team.
Sweat, who has a winning individual record so far this season, was ahead in his match against Pleasant Grove's Bronson Young going into the third period. Up 3-1 with a mere 20 seconds remaining in the match, Young broke out of the hold Sweat had him in, got the reversal, and snared the points necessary to defeat Sweat 6-3.
Sweat's weight class, one of the toughest in the state because it features wrestlers who possess the combination of speed of a smaller guy with the strength of a larger fighter, is always difficult to place in, but the Wasatch senior is always up for the challenge. "It was a tough match and I felt good all the way. I had him early but he got back and tied me up," Garrett said. "Just at the end he broke and got the reversal on me and that was what killed me," he added.
The Wasp leader was pleased overall with his match although coming up short in the win column. "I'm happy to have been chosen to wrestle there for sure, but my focus is on winning a state championship for Wasatch," Sweat said. After Wednesday night's duel at Morgan High School, that journey continues next weekend with the Rocky Mountain Rumble, also held at UVU.
